About the Event

Gigantic temples housing giant shiva lingas, massive mansions housing century old establishment, sad tales of the journey across kalapani and last but not the least a strange connection with Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and the famous Indologist William Jones. This is Khidirpur and Garden Reach, two of Calcutta’s least explored territories. The port and river makes these two south Calcutta neighborhoods an interesting area with a series of known and unknown stories.

Starting with the stories of Jonarayan Ghosal and his family temples and mansions to the residence of William Jones, these two areas of Calcutta has a lot of interesting stories to offer. The area also has its share of violence the infamous lynching of the IPS officer is still fresh in the minds of middle aged and senior Calcuttans.

The area also witnessed one of the largest labour movements in the world history, when thousand of Indians made their journey of no return to faraway lands. The huge BNR complex has a lot of history to offer. The restored ball signal and the plaque of the barrage balloons tell a series of unknown tales. Last of all, the river front with is cool breeze is enough to make one hungry for the famous Khidirpur biriyani.

About the Speaker:

Rangan Datta is an eminent travel blogger and photographer, whose work documenting a lot of almost-forgotten sites across Bengal has made them relevant in our imagination. He "lives to travel" and is a management and mathematics teacher by profession. He has also been involved extensively with the Calcutta chapter of Wikipedia, the world's largest online encyclopaedia.
